The Knights Hospitaller, officially the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, was founded around 1070 by a group of Italian merchants who built a hospital in Jerusalem to care for Christian pilgrims. Although they continued their charitable missions, the Hospitallers became known for their martial prowess and discipline.
